Heart Beats Family Fun Run & Festival Map Brochure
A community-driven print design project created for the Heart Beats Family Fun Run & Walk. This brochure included a redesigned course map, schedule, and sponsor layout to ensure an enjoyable and organized event experience for participants and families.
Overview
The original map failed to accurately reflect the advertised race distances and posed logistical issues at the finish line. Additionally, the 3km walk and 5km run routes fell short of their intended lengths and finished in opposite directions, creating a risk of congestion and confusion for participants.
I conducted a site visit and used Google Earth to accurately remap both the 3km and 5km routes to reflect proper distances and improve event flow. I then designed the brochure’s layout to clearly communicate race logistics, festival features, and sponsor visibility while maintaining a welcoming, family-friendly tone.
Research
1. Site Visit Observation
Joined event coordinators and volunteers on-site at Confederation Park to observe route logistics, traffic patterns, and key congestion areas.
2. Route Distance Analysis
Mapped the original routes against actual distances and uncovered a discrepancy that would have impacted event credibility and participant satisfaction.
3. Spatial Planning via Google Earth
Used Google Earth and city maps to remap the 3km and 5km routes, ensuring accurate course lengths and unified finish-line orientation for smoother participant flow.
Design
The brochure was designed with a calm, approachable aesthetic to reflect the organization’s family-first values. The redesigned map emphasized clarity, while icons, spacing, and typography were refined to enhance readability. Sponsor placements were optimized for visibility without overwhelming key event information.
Results
The new map layout and directional signage reduced confusion and helped participants easily navigate both the festival and race courses.
Remapped 3K and 5K routes ensured accurate distances and safe, unified start and end points, minimizing congestion.
The brochure served as the event’s first-ever all-in-one guide, combining schedule, sponsors, map, and safety info in a single, easy-to-use format.
Reflection
Designing this brochure from the ground up showed me how foundational design tools can make a big impact in community-centered events. With no previous reference to work from, I had the opportunity to create something both functional and meaningful. Through close collaboration with organizers and an on-site walkthrough, I was able to make decisions based on real-world needs. The final brochure became more than just a handout. It served as a clear, informative, and accessible guide that helped families feel confident and supported throughout the event.
